New Star Trek Reboot Idea: Present-Day Alien First Contact

Because of the various incarnations of Star Trek, especially the new shows on Paramount Plus, I've started to view Star Trek as a multiverse. Whenever continuity is broken or a series diverges significantly, I see it as just another universe with its own story. We all have our own 'head canon'—the parts of the story we personally accept—and it's up to each of us whether we include these divergences in our view of Star Trek. Rather than leaving fans to rationalize my proposed series as part of their head canon, I'm being up front: this is an alternate history, a different universe in the Star Trek multiverse.

Setting the Stage: Present-Day Alien Contact

Premise: What if an alien race made contact with humanity right now in the 2020s? How would an alien race making first contact affect our world and shape our future?

Key Events:

  • Warp Drive Discovery: In our current timeline, a man or a team discovers warp drive technology, enabling faster-than-light travel.

  • First Contact with Vulcans: This breakthrough facilitates immediate contact with the Vulcans (or another Star Trek species), leading to accelerated technological and societal advancements.

  • Formation of Starfleet and the Federation: These institutions are established much earlier in Earth's history, drastically reshaping global politics, culture, and future trajectories.

Honoring Iconic Characters

One aspect I’m particularly passionate about is the portrayal of iconic characters. In the J.J. Abrams-produced movies and the newer Paramount Plus shows, it feels like Paramount has relied heavily on already-established characters. Personally, I believe characters like Kirk and Spock should only be portrayed by the original actors—Shatner and Nimoy. Similarly, Picard deserves to be played solely by Patrick Stewart.

In my proposed series, since the events are set in our present and occur in a different universe (among infinite variations), these iconic characters might never be born in this timeline. This approach respects the legacy of the original portrayals by maintaining their uniqueness and preventing dilution through multiple reinterpretations.

Potential Storylines and Themes

  • Global Integration: Explore how different nations and cultures react to and integrate alien technology and ideologies.

  • Political Dynamics: Examine shifts in global power structures, potential conflicts, and alliances in the wake of newfound interstellar connections.

  • Technological Advancements: Assess how warp drive and other alien technologies transform everyday life, economy, and societal norms.

  • Ethical Dilemmas: Address moral questions arising from rapid technological progress and interspecies interactions.

Visual and Technical Design

  • Modernized Aesthetics: Update the visual design of ships, uniforms, and technology to reflect current technological advancements and aesthetic preferences.

  • High Production Value: Utilize cutting-edge special effects to bring the multiverse and alien technologies to life, enhancing immersion.

I believe this reboot could offer a fresh and intellectually stimulating take on the Star Trek universe. By setting the narrative in a present-day altered timeline, it provides ample opportunities to explore contemporary issues, diverse character dynamics, and innovative storytelling techniques—all while respecting the legacy of the original depiction of Star Trek from 1966-2005.
